10 Small Home Repairs You Shouldn't Ignore
June 27, 2026

Small problems around the house have a way of getting bigger. A slow drip becomes a rotted cabinet. A loose handrail becomes a fall. Tackling minor repairs early is the cheapest form of home insurance.
1. Dripping faucets
A single leaky faucet can waste thousands of gallons a year. Most are fixed with a new washer or cartridge in under an hour.
2. Running toilets
If you hear water cycling after the tank fills, the flapper or fill valve is failing. Parts cost a few dollars.
3. Loose handrails
Stair and porch rails take real force during a slip. Re-anchor them into studs or solid blocking, not just drywall.
4. Caulk gaps around tubs and sinks
Cracked caulk lets water reach the subfloor. Strip the old bead, dry the joint, and apply fresh silicone.
5. Failing weatherstripping
Daylight under a door means heated or cooled air is leaving. Replace the sweep and side seals.
6. Slow drains
Hair and grease build up gradually. Clear traps before you need a plumber.
7. Cracked grout
Once grout cracks, water gets behind the tile. Regrout small sections before the substrate fails.
8. Sticking doors
Usually a hinge screw working loose or a settled frame. A longer screw into the stud often solves it.
9. Dirty dryer vents
Lint buildup is a leading cause of house fires. Clean the full duct, not just the trap.
10. Loose outlets and switches
Wiggly devices mean loose wires and arcing risk. Shut off the breaker and tighten or replace.
Knock these out in a weekend and you'll head off most of the calls we get later in the year.
